008. Good idea, Els. [wed feb 10th, 2010 »7:09p]
[ mood | troubled ]

I can't help but think, in light of the discussions on Victoria's journal, that we may be in a great deal of trouble, even those of us safely insulated within Hogwarts walls. Given that the Muggle government has absolutely no chance of effectively being able to enforce the law, and that they must have some idea of it, I rather suspect this is a prelude to a larger strike. I don't doubt that the UN is scrambling to pacify Ireland right now, enacting similar bluffs to attempt to bully them into backing down.

No magic person in his or her right mind will sign up with the registry. All of them will realize the logistic holes, most of them will (I suspect) be resentful of the law, and those who aren't will likely be too afraid of their fellows to "betray" the community by submitting. I suppose there's a chance that witches and wizards in areas heavily populated by Muggles might register for fear of retaliation from their neighbours if they fail to (or, indeed, harassment by nearby government officials who are aware of their existence); I suppose what's most likely is that we'll see a lot of families attempting to relocate. And a lot of violence.

What I think is that this might be foreshadowing a serious attack on the part of the Irish government. I can't imagine there aren't a number of Ministry officials thinking the same thing. They have, essentially, made magic illegal. They also have no way of enforcing these laws, practically. So, the magical population of Ireland becomes illegal by necessity. Even if they complied, there's no way for the Muggle government to ascertain that. They've officially dehumanized the population.

I suppose we must be thankful that there is no practical way to detonate a largescale bomb without injuring Muggles as well as witches and wizards. However, I can't help but think that the Muggle government is preparing to do anything short of that to extinguish their population. They're tired of fighting tiny battles. How could they not be?

It bears watching.

I should be back at Hogwarts tomorrow. Lexie's filled me up on most of what's happened by owl. I've been unconscious for a good part of the new year which was frustrating but

Things cross that out I guess that's not surprising.

I just thought I would put a heads up that I'm not dead I suppose though most of you should already know that.

I suppose I'll see most of you tomorrow.

It's interesting that the case hasn't been solved yet, so to speak.

For all that Hogwarts is the most rewarding academic institution in (indisputably) the country and (disputably) the continent, it's also one of the singularly least private places in the world. Although it's a very big castle with, considering its size (especially once hidden rooms, private passageways, and the numerous other peculiarities of the building are taken into account) precious few human occupants, almost all of them operate on a schedule, in which they are expected to be in certain places for most of the day and are made note of when they deviate from it. However, the school is also home to a number of ghosts and paintings, all of which are quite sentient and far more capable of subtle espionage than most of the living humans present. PRIVATE. One wonders if their silence is a sign of prowess on the culprits' parts, or a sign of support among the population, many of whom would have been created or deceased at a time when anti-Muggle sentiment was far more politically correct. /PRIVATE. Between our considerable non-human/non-living population and the presence of patrolling Prefects and staff members, it's somewhat staggering that no one has given any positive confirmation of the identities of what the popular opinion seems to indicate are our multiple culprits.

For those of you who attend classes from other houses, let me summarize:
There are a lot of eyes and ears at Hogwarts. I'm impressed that none of them seem to have any useful information in this instance.

I'm afraid I'm unfamiliar with the equivalent of "resisting arrest" in the interrogation world. I suppose that in the simplest terms, "resisting interrogation" would suffice. If nothing else, I believe that the notices serve as something of a subpoena- I would be much surprised if evading interrogation in this case would not be considered a suspicious act worthy of being deemed a suspect in the case.

Which is, of course, all moot, given that short of leaving the school, there's not really any way for anyone to effectively avoid them.

I suppose it will be interesting.
